THE UNIFORMS

The basic ensemble of uniforms for the WRs was already in place months before the announcement of the formation of the Marine Corps Women’s Reserve in February of 1943. In mid-December 1942, a memorandum from the Marine Commandant to the Assistant Secretary of the Navy requested that Mrs Anne Adams Lentz, then an employee of the War Department, be assigned to duty at Marine Headquarters for a period of approximately 30 days to assist in the design of the various uniforms intended for the forthcoming Women’s Reserves, USMC.

Mrs Lentz had previously been employed by the school uniforms section of a large New York department store, before assisting the uniform board of the US Army for the Army Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC) uniforms. Mrs Lentz reported for duty in early January 1943 and, after consultation with the Marine Depot Quartermaster in Philadelphia, was dispatched to New York City to oversee construction of the various WR uniform samples by the Women’s Garment Manufacturers of New York. These samples were subsequently shown to and approved by the Marine Commandant.
